Psychotherapists often lose clients after the first session due to a heavy focus on intake rather than connection. "The First Kiss" by psychologist Daryl Chow, Ph.D., encourages therapists to slay sacred cows in initial encounters so as to retain and improve  client outcomes.

Editorial Reviews

"Most people with mental disorders do not receive any mental health treatment. Those who seek out psychotherapy do so because they believe that such services will be helpful. Unfortunately, many suffering individuals fail to be engaged in psychotherapy and dropout early in treatment (most after the first session)--before they had the opportunity to benefit fully. What are we doing wrong?

Daryl Chow, in this engaging book, shows us what we have been doing wrong and more importantly, what we should be doing differently. Throw out the traditional assessment of psychopathology and engage the client with the fervor that is necessary to form an alliance that provides the scaffolding for therapy to work. From the very first minute, focus on the client and their suffering and don't hide behind the sterile clinical approach of traditional history taking and clinical diagnoses.

This book walks the talk--you will be engaged from the very first moment of picking up the book!"

"Author Daryl Chow is a leading researcher on using Deliberate Practice to improve clinical effectiveness. In this book, he provides practical guidance on one of the most important and challenging moments in therapy: your first encounter with your clients. Clearly organized in sequential steps, Daryl Chow shows us how to get past the sacred but ineffective "intake session" and instead discover how to truly connect with our clients. The text is research-based as well as grounded in his honest and courageous self-disclosure.
This book is highly recommended for all therapists, from trainees to experienced clinicians who want to improve their effectiveness."

"Daryl Chow has finally written The Book I've wanted every therapist to read for years. The First Kiss reminds all of us--from students to seasoned veterans--that the first imperative of our work is to hear and understand the people who seek our services--in their terms. With an ease and generosity that make the reader feel like they're chatting over coffee with Daryl rather than reading words on a page, Dr. Chow welcomes us into his world as a creative and erudite scholar-practitioner. Once there, we experience what becomes possible when we become relationally responsive to people rather than rigidly robotic with intake procedures. This book should become dog-eared, papered with post-its, and full of multi-colored highlighting."

"Exactly as anticipated, Daryl Chow goes above and beyond expectations. At a time when few therapists have time to read as much as they would like, Chow's latest offering is as accessible as it is indispensable. Open this book to any page and you will become inspired."

"Fun, accessible, and practical--words rarely used to describe the writings of a researcher! But Daryl Chow is more than a researcher, he's a skilled clinician with a passion to change the field of psychotherapy. In his book, "The First Kiss," Daryl invites readers to consider how an approach based on engagement--beginning with intake and the first few sessions--serves as a vehicle for creating greater impact, and ultimately, better therapy outcomes. "The First Kiss" is a brilliant dance between research and practice, with Daryl's transparency providing readers with opportunities to hear, see, and think differently about psychotherapy. Through anecdotes and stories from a myriad of fields, case illustrations, and yes, practical examples real-world examples, "The First Kiss" accomplishes something that few books of this kind do--it keeps the reader "engaged" from beginning to end. I highly recommend this book!"
